Medicine and Allied Health resources

This is the gateway to all eight of the Simon Schwob Memorial Library's medical and allied health webliographies. I have divided them roughly by discipline and area of interest. In them you'll find links of interest to biology majors, but interest in health and medicine stretches across many disciplines. These webliographies should also be of use to anyone else with questions about health, mental health, medical ethics, and health care management issues. Note: a few of the links now require obtaining a free subscription.

Commonly Studied Diseases

  • American Heart Association This site offers brief descriptions of heart diseases, an explanation of healthy heart function, articles on prevention of cardiac disorders, statistics, etc.
  • Arthritis Foundation If you are looking for information about arthritis, this is a good place to start. Find easy to read articles from "Arthritis Today" as well as other publications.
  • HealthWeb: AIDS A meta page that leads to major AIDS sites arranged by such categories as: prevention, treatment, conferences, and publications.
  • Heart Disease Center A wide variety of articles on prevention and treatment of assorted heart diseases. Articles receive frequent updates and are in language that the patient and student can easily understand.
  • Influenza: Prevention and Control This is the site to learn about anything having to do with the flu, from past killer pandemics to who should have a flu vaccine. There are articles as well as statistics from the CDC, who manages this site.
  • International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care Full text articles on AIDS treatment. Articles are under publications, including the organization's own journal. Emphasis is on preventing and treating AIDS in the developing world.
  • Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Disease Center This well organized site offers news, "reference" articles, quizzes, and links about this disease of senior citizens.
  • National Cancer Institute This site offers quick links to dictionaries and publications. Also found in this site is access to articles on specific types of cancer and information on various cancer topics.
  • National Heart Lung and Blood Institute Articles on heart and lung diseases and their prevention and treatment. Information for health professionals might also be useful to biology and health science majors.
  • National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases A treasure trove of pamphlets, links, and pages about endocrine and digestive disorders. Pamphlets are available in Spanish language and easy-to-read formats.
  • National Kidney and Urologic Disease Information Clearing House Most articles are about assorted renal and urological conditions are under "Kindey and Urologic Disease." Topics include: impotence, incontinence, high blood pressure, and more. There are also links to patient support groups, and information about clinical trials.

General Medicine

  • Bandolier A full text journal for evidence based medicine. Evidence based medicine consists of studies with elaborate statistics, the results of which hopefully can change current practice. Articles cover everything from allergies to the place of science in medical research.
  • Consumers' and Patients Information Pages Medical news in laypersons' terms. There are also links to Medline and Healthfinder Plus. This site is the product of the Agency for Healthcare Research Quality, a part of the Department of Health and Human Services.
  • eBMJ British Medical Journal A complete full text edition of the British Medical Journal. Suitable for the same audiences as JAMA, Lancet, and New England Journal of Medicine.
  • FamilyDoctor.org Health Handouts This site's title says it all. Readable outline style handouts are available for a wide variety of medical conditions and diseases, all arranged alphabetically in a very long list. The handouts provide no suggestions for further reading or links to other sites.
  • Healthfinder -- A Gateway to Consumer Health Information "Healthfinder is a gateway to selected consumer health and human services information resources provided by U.S. government agencies and other organizations serving the public interest." Particular emphasis lies on dealing with government agencies and programs related to health and medical benefits.
  • Medical Dictionary of Popular Medical Terms This recently updated dictionary offers both an alphabetical browse and a search engine. Typing in a term gives not only your term, but also a list of related terms. Some definitions have illustrations, and others have the etymology of a term's Latin roots.
  • MedicineNet An extensive consumer health site, featuring a wide selection of articles on medical tests, drugs, and diseases, as well as breaking medical news and a medical dictionary.
  • Medline Plus: News by Date Lists of articles arranged by subject or date. Also includes resources such as an encyclopedia and dictionary. A directory helps to locate physicians, clinics, libraries, etc.
  • National Health Information Center This site provides a health referral service with information such as recent announcements, publications, and conferences.
  • The Merck Manual An online version of this classic handbook of diseases. Features both a search engine and a table of contents, divided by broad medical discipline. Written in a terse technical style, suitable for biology students and motivated members of the general public.

Medicine and Society

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention The Centers for Disease Control pledge to "promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability."
  • CHID Online CHID is a database of health and prevention related documents. Many of these are government produced.
  • Food and Drug Administration The Food and Drug Administration is in charge of food (both human and animal), drug, cosmetic, and medical device safety. Its web site is a storehouse of regulatory news, articles on the agency's activities, and up-to-date regulations explained in understandable language.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration OSHA offers: fact sheets, news releases, a library of links, and even a section on ergonomics. Click on "Library" or "News Room" for most of the useful information.
  • World Health Organization WHO stands for World Health Organization, and its business is health promotion as well as disease prevention for all the worlds' peoples. Their site features information on infectious disease, prevention programs, international statistics, and links to other public health resources.

Medicine for Women, Children, and the Elderly

  • American Academy of Pediatrics Web Site Full text consumer health pamphlets and research abstracts lie scattered beneath various headings and topics at this site.
  • Medem Medical Library: Women's Health Pamphlet style articles on assorted aspects of women's health sorted by category. News has articles mainly from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Medline Plus Children's Health An assortment of links to articles, databases, and statistics on a wide variety of pediatric health topics.
  • National Institute on Aging -- Health Information This site offers access to a variety of pamphlets and books on aging and health.
  • NWHRC -- Women's Health Links A meta page with links, not just to reproductive health sites, but also to information on: fitness, cancer, clinical trials, aging, eye disease and much, much more.
  • Pediatrics Scholarly medical journal with a searchable database of full text articles from 1948 to 2004 (the current year is embargoed). The search interface is the same one used by Highwire Press, which makes this journal available online, and by Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. The audience is physicians, scientists, faculty, and any one else with at least a college biology background.
  • Seniors Health on C-Health Articles on a wide variety of medical issues of concern to senior citizens and caregivers. Articles cover everything from Alzheimer's disease to skin care.

Mental Health

  • Alcoholics Anonymous Half a dozen pamphlets that explain about alcoholism, AA, and living with an alcoholic. The pamphlets are fairly long and easy to understand.
  • American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Read the articles via links in the center of the first page or look under "Facts for Families" for a huge array of full text pamphlets.
  • American Association of Suicidology Useful articles and fact sheets on suicide are hidden under a variety of headings at this site. The headings include: "Fact Sheets," a "Survivors of Suicide" section, and sections on "Prevention," "Treatment," and other topics.
  • Anxiety Disorders Association of America This site features cross referenced articles that cover: anxiety disorder basics, consumer information, a glossary, and a list of links for professionals, along with a list of anxiety specialists.
  • Eating & Image Issues A site dedicated to subclinical eating disorders and body image problems that plague many women. Read comprehensible articles about the mild forms of eating disorders.
  • Information on Specific Mental Disorders -- Their Diagnosis and Treatment Provides, descriptions of, discussion of therapy for, and links about a list of common mental disorders.
  • Obsessive Compulsive Foundation A web site full of articles that explain the basics of obsessive compulsive disorder. There are also more in-depth articles on various aspects of this disease and its treatment.

Pharmacology and Pharmacy

  • Drug Digest "DrugDigest is a noncommercial, evidence-based, consumer health and drug information site dedicated to empowering consumers to make informed choices about drugs and treatment options." This site offers readable articles on drug therapies for a variety of medical conditions, comparison lists for similar medications, and even references within the comparison lists. There is also information on drug interactions and a news archives as well as a search engine.
  • Mayo Clinic: Drug InformationA full text online database derived from Micromedex, which provides readable patient education pieces as well as advice and instruction for physicians, the Mayo Clinic's own articles, plus a short list of links.
  • PDR Health Offers a variety of articles listed as part of the site's "getting well" network. There are articles about diseases, wellness, and therapies. There is also a listing of clinical trials and a searchable index of medications.
