An ever growing number of scholarly journals are located on the world wide web. The publications listed below are history journals that range from the local to the global, and cover a wide array of historical fields.
20th Century Women The e-journal of first person biography. There are seven issues of the journal on this web site dating from 1996 to 2000. This site may not have been revised since the web mistress' and editor's death in 2000.
49th Parallel An Interdisciplinary Journal of North America. The site has issues from 1999-2004 available.
Access: History Mainly European and nonWestern history. Issues available range from 1997-2001. The site has not received an update since 2001.
African Studies Quarterly: The Online Features modern African history. The archives extends from 1997 to 2004.
American Diplomacy Covers United States foreign policy and world affairs. The archives stretches from 1996 to 2004 and includes a sophisticated search engine.
American Quarterly: Hypertext Scholarship in American Studies Articles on assorted aspects of American Studies. This journal does not offer an online archives.
Anistoriton: History, Archaeology, Art History An archaeology/history journal published in both English and Greek. The archives runs from 1997 to 2004, and is accessible through a search engine. To conserve space, articles in the archives may not include images.
Catholic Southwest: A Journal of History and Culture A journal about Catholics and their history in the American Southwest. The archive offers issues from 1990 to 2002, but only out of print issues are completely full text. Other issues feature full text book reviews only and the most recent issue offers only a table of contents.
The Columbia Journal of Historiography A journal on the history of history writing. Only the Fall 2003 issue is available online.
Common-Place: The Interactive Journal of Early American Life Articles on American history from before the Civil War. Features an archive with issues from 2000 to the present.
CROMOHS: Cyber Review of Modern Historiography A journal that covers the history of creating history. The archives extends back to 1996. Some of the articles are in Italian.
Electronic Journal of International History "The eJIH embraces all aspects of the history of relations between states and societies" since 1500. The journal offers a small list of articles mainly from 2000 and 2002.
Environmental History History of environmental policy, law, and humans coping with environmental change and disaster. The archives only includes the last four or five issues, but it also has a search engine.
Essays in History Features articles by "the graduate students of the Corcoran Department of History, Essays in History seeks to publish articles based on primary sources in all fields of history by all scholars, from undergraduates to tenured professors." The archives offers issues dating back to 1990.
Gateway: An Academic History Journal on the Web Gateway features scholarly articles published by graduate students. It has an archive of seven issues from 2001 and 2002. The web site has not been updated in nearly two years.
Genders Historical articles that focus on race and gender. The archives includes issues from 1998 to the present as well as instructions for printing and downloading articles.
H-Net Reviews in the Humanities and Social Sciences Book and multimedia reviews. Archives range from 1995-2004 and are accessible with a search engine or browseable by year.
History in Focus "Provides original articles, book reviews, and links to historical resources." Back issues from 2001 to present are available.
History of Education Covers the history of education from the 1600's to the present. Issues from the last year or two are available online.
The Jane Austen Journal On-Line Contains "reports and papers from the annual conference, articles written by members on Jane Austen, her family, her art, or her times." The archive ranges from 1999-2002.
Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies "A peer-review academic publication intended for professors and young researchers interested in the study of religions and ideologies.J.S.R.I. encourages interdisciplinary approaches engaging the following domains: interreligious dialogue, philosophy of religions, political philosophy and political science, ethics, religious studies, anthropology, sociology, educational science and communications theory." The archives extends from 2002 to the present and issues are available as html or pdf (Adobe Acrobat Reader required). Many articles are NOT in English.
Journal of Arabic and Islamic Studies "The Journal of Arabic and Islamic Studies has been established to promote the study of Arabic language and literature and Islamic civilization through the publication of research articles and review articles." Back issues from 1996 to 2003 are available on the site under "Contents." Articles are often PDF (requiring Adobe Acrobat Reader) and many are NOT in English.
Journal of Millennial Studies Brings together "strands of millennial, apocalyptic, and utopic studies that have been scattered in different academic disciplines for easy reference -- to aid in creating a community of millennial scholars." Back issues from 1998 to 2000 are available online. Articles are PDF format requiring Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Journal for MultiMedia History "The first peer-reviewed electronic journal that presents, evaluates, and disseminates multimedia historical scholarship." Issues ranging from 1998-2000 are available on the web site.
Journal of Religion & Society "The journal promotes the study of religious groups and beliefs among the various peoples of the world, past and present, with emphasis on American religions and the Western religious traditions." The archives ranges from 1999 to the present and articles are available in a print-friendly version.
Journal of Southern Religion "The first scholarly journal devoted to the study of religion in the American South." Issues from 1998 to 2003 are available on the site.
Journal of the Association for History and Computing Internet, computer, and related-technology history. The archives is available on the front page of the site, and it ranges from 1998 to the present.
Journal of the Georgia Association of Historians History that focuses on the state of Georgia. Tables of contents range from 1980-2000 and there are links to full text articles from 1980-1988. Full text articles are in PDF that requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Journal of World History "Devoted to historical analysis from a global point of view, the Journal of World History features a range of comparative and cross-cultural scholarship and encourages research on forces that work their influences across cultures and civilizations." The web site features issues from the last two years and a search engine as well.
Jouvert A Journal of Postcolonial Studies. Back issues from 1993 to 2002 reside beneath the "Past Issues" link.
Labour History Covers the history of working people, labor unions, and labor reform. Issues from the last year or two are on the front page of the site.
Labour/Le Travail Labor history from a Canadian point of view. Several years worth of back issues are available via the site's front page.
Law and History Review "America's leading legal history journal." The front page of the web site links to issues from the last five years.
The Material History of American Religion Project: Electronic Journal Focuses on the "material aspects of American religious life." Links to an assortment of full text html documents and papers are available on the front web page.
Media History Monographs A journal that covers the history of journalism and broadcasting. The archives ranges from 1997 to the present, is indexed by author and subject and browseable by year.
The Mickle Street Review An Electronic Journal of Whitman and American Studies. The archive consists of three issues, one as old as 1979, tucked in to a burgundy i-frame.
The MIT Electronic Journal of Middle East Studies (MIT-EJMES) This journal offers interdisciplinary and wide ranging articles on the history and culture of the Middle East. The archive ranges from 2001-2003 and articles and tables of contents are PDF files that require Adobe Acrobat Reader. This reader appears inside a framed screen.
Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide A Journal of Nineteenth-Century Visual Culture. The site comes with a two year archive of back issues, and print friendly versions of articles are available.
North Star: A Journal of African American Religious History A journal that focuses on "religious cultures of people of African descent in the United States." The archives resides under "Index" and ranges from 1997 to 2003.
Oral History Review The major journal of oral history in the United States.
Northeast Ohio Journal of History An "interdisciplinary periodical specializing in research pertaining to Northeast Ohio and the surrounding region." The archives cover 2002 and 2003.
Paisano: The Online History Journal from Phi Alpha Theta at UT-Austin History articles on a variety of topics. There are three issues on the site. These were published in 2000, 2001, and 2002.
Renaissance Forum: An Electronic Journal of Early-Modern Literary and Historical Studies Articles on Renaissance history, literature, and culture. The archives is under "Back Numbers." and ranges from 1996 to the present.
Reviews in History A journal that features book reviews and historical review articles (literature searches and reappraisals). The archives are listed as "Reviews," "Articles," and "Reappraisals," and they extend back to 1996.
Safundi: The Journal of South African and American Comparative Studies A journal that compares South African and American history and culture. The archives is listed as "Journal Issues" and extends back to 2000 and it is NOT free full text.
Screening the Past A journal of film and media history with an Australian emphasis. The archives links is called "Classics and Reruns" and the archives extends from 1997 to the present.
Studies in the World History of Slavery, Abolition and Emancipation An e-mail discussion list that discusses the history of slavery and related issues. One can read the list archives by clicking on "Discussion Logs." The archives extends back to 1995, and it also has a search engine.
The History Teacher "The most widely recognized journal in the United States devoted to the teaching of history in the secondary and higher education classroom." The front page of the web site features issues from 2000 to the present.
World History Connected "Presents innovative classroom-ready scholarship, keeps readers up to date on the latest research and debates, presents the best in learning and teaching methods and practices, offers readers rich teaching resources, and reports on exemplary teaching." All three issues of this journal are available at this web site.
