Finding the newest information on the web
Because one can publish quickly, the Internet is an excellent place to find the latest news, sports, weather, and business information. Generally well known sites or a listing from a directory work better than a search engine for finding this kind of information. Here are some sites for the latest headlines, weather, sports, and business. Remember there are many, many news sites on the Internet. These are just some examples to get you started.
News and headlines
The New York Times The United States' newspaper of record. The Times not only offers today's news but analysis, op-ed, weekly specialty sections, and an entertaining magazine. The site requires free registration for full access. For CSU patrons, the New York Times is available through LexisNexis in GALILEO.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer For local news, there is nothing better than the local paper. The Ledger-Enquirer also has local classified advertising and a searchable archives that extends back to 1993. Note: the archives is not full text but articles are available on microfilm at the library.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution The Southeastern United States' newspaper of record, though it tends to be more an Atlanta than a Georgia newspaper. Includes some news of regional interest, fairly local classified advertising, and a searchable archives extending back to 1985. The archives is not full text (you can obtain articles in the library), and full access to the site requires free registration.
Yahoo! News Front Page Links to all major wire services, both US and international as well as breaking headlines and news sorted by category such as "Top Stories," "Politics," "Science," "Health" etc... No passwords or registration required.
Open Directory News A directory listing similar to Yahoo's but also offering radio stations, e-zines, Newspapers, and more. Dmoz does not offer headlines or show advertising.
Weather forecasts
Yahoo! Weather Weather forecasts for nearly any where in the world, along with weather headlines and links to weather related articles. Enter a zip code to get a local seven day forecast or browse by location under"United States."
National Weather Service Click on the site's image map to obtain a detailed local weather forecast. Forecasts sometimes take two or three clicks to reach, but the site has no outside advertising. The site also features satellite maps, severe storm warnings, and maritime forecasts.
Sports reports
Yahoo! Sports Articles, scores, and standings for most major professional and college sports. Offers some international coverage as well as fantasy sports. Does not cover smaller college sports particularly well.
Open Directory Sports -- Resources and Media A directory of sites that cover sports of all sorts. Includes professional, college, amateur, and international sports, and links to web sites that cover a specific sport.
Business and financial news
Yahoo! Finance Business news stories along with slightly delayed quotes for all the major markets, market overviews, and more. Note: up to the minute financials is only available to paying customers.
