Teaching Politeness Strategies Using Communicative Language Tasks
When one learns a second or foreign language, one must learn more than just the pronunciation, the words, the appropriate word order; one must also learn the appropriate way to use those words and sentences in various social contexts. This component of the linguistic knowledge is called pragmatics and is known as the most difficult aspect of second language learning. Pragmatic knowledge also includes one’s ability to perform various functions with the polite use of language. This presentation will discuss a research study which explored teaching of Korean honorifics (a grammatical device to express politeness toward the person being addressed) to native speakers of English using various communicative language tasks.
