Teaching Mathematical Concepts Through Problem Solving
Comparisons of international assessments in mathematics show that American students are outperformed by students in several comparable countries. Consequently, instructional practices in mathematics have become a focus of attention. This presentation focuses on instructional methods that are effective in helping children learn mathematics. Comparisons of multiple assessment measures completed throughout the 2006-2007 school year in conjunction with my year-long experience teaching a class of third grade students at one of our partner schools indicates that the incorporation of problem solving improves students’ mathematical thinking.
