Wetlands are fascinating areas filled with a wide variety of plant and animal life. You can learn more about wetlands by visiting the library during October. Our wetlands display is full of interesting information on swamp plants, animals, and legends. Come read all about mysterious "Swamp Thangs" like Florida's wild skunk ape and the swamp "monsters" of the Okefenokee.
Learn how wetlands affect humans and wildlife and how we are trying to preserve these areas of natural beauty. While you're here, you can also view the Georgia Conservancy's video production Wetlands: Georgia's Vanishing Treasure . This video is available for viewing in the main lobby area of the library. Browse our wetlands book selections for more information.
You can also learn more about the learning opportunities available at Oxbow Meadows. The Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center is the result of a cooperative venture of Columbus State University, the Columbus Waterworks, and the Columbus Consolidated Government. This educational and learning center is open to the public.
Oxbow Meadows is open Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from Noon to 4 p.m. They are closed on Mondays. Oxbow Meadows is located on South Lumpkin Road just north of Fort Benning (at the old landfill). For more information call (706) 687-4090.
And while you're here, don't forget to visit our very special guests. We have two baby slider turtles visiting the library this month. These turtles are only visiting for a short while - don't miss them!
