The current display focuses on the celebration of OLD GLORY. This display covers the Evolution of OLD GLORY; Protocols and Myths; Holidays; and items that have been inspired by the flag.

Evolution of Old Glory

No one knows with absolute certainty who designed the first stars and stripes or who made it. Congressman Francis Hopkinson seems most likely to have designed it, and few historians believe that Betsy Ross made the first one.

Earlier flags did not have a specific format for the stars and stripes. This is the reason that the earlier flags look so much different from the current flag.

The flag code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used.
