Celebrating 40 Years
The library is helping to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Columbus State University by looking back over the entire 40 year history of the school. Items on display include letters, photographs, floor plans, newspaper articles, programs, invitations, and other such memorabilia. Only a few of the items on display are included here. Stop by the library to see more. Maybe you'll even see some people you recognize in our images from the past!
The College Mace and Presidential Medallion (above) represent the long tradition of university regalia. The Columbus College, now Columbus State University, mace and medallion were designed by Mr. Jamie Howard, Professor of Art and were first used at the inauguration ceremony of the college's third president, Dr. Frank Douglas Brown. The mace and medallion are housed in the library except when being used during ceremonial functions.
| Columbus College was originally housed in the Shannon Hosiery Mill in downtown Columbus. This small beginning is commemorated with a display of photos, letters, and newspaper articles about the college. A floor plan indicating the location of various college offices is also included. Today's campus if a far cry from that one building downtown, but the dedication of the staff and faculty remains the same. |

Dr. Thomas Whitley served as the president of Columbus College from its beginning in 1958 through 1979. Many articles about him have been published in local newspapers. Reproductions of some of those articles are on display along with a bust of Dr. Whitley (right). The statue of Dr. Whitley, along with portrait paintings of Dr. Whitley, Mr. John Robertson Kinnett, Mr. Allen M. Woodall, Sr., and Mrs. Ruth Schutzbank Schwob are on permanent exhibit in the periodicals area on the main floor of the library. |
| Throughout the years the Schwob Library has changed along with the university. Originally housed in one room of the Shannon Hosiery Mill, the library was moved to Woodall Hall on the main campus in 1963. In 1975 the library was moved into the building where it is now housed. The library was then named for Simon S. Schwob, industrialist and philanthropist. |

The building is not all that has changed. The library has moved from a small collection of books to a large and growing collection including books, CD-ROMs, audio and video tapes, and microfilms. Computers are becoming more common in the library as well. Online databases are available through the campus LAN, stand-alone PCs, and GALILEO. The old card catalog has been replaced by on online catalog. And, of course, the Internet plays a growing role in the delivery of information to library patrons. |
Many changes have occurred over the years since Columbus College accepted its first students. We at the library look forward to the next 40 years of exciting and innovative happenings here at Columbus State University.
