Interlibrary Loan Department
Mission Statement
Columbus State University's Interlibrary Loan Department supports the Libraries' curricular and research objectives by providing a means to obtain resources not owned in-house for the purpose of intellectual growth and personal development.
Vision
The Interlibrary Loan Department is committed to meeting the educational, research, and developmental needs of Columbus State University's faculty, staff, and students. This is done through collaborations with other academic, technical, and public institutions. Such efforts foster the idea of sharing knowledge and information freely and cooperatively.
Goals
- To enhance the faculty, staff, and student academic experience by providing materials to supplement CSU's own collection and support the Libraries' objectives.
- To improve the ambience of interlibrary loan staff members and patrons throughout the process of obtaining and returning material.
- To focus on endeavoring to exhibit excellence and quality concerning using interlibrary loan services via a public means of communication (Internet, e-mail, brochures, etc.).

Policies and Procedures
General
The Simon Schwob Memorial Library actively encourages and participates in activities which foster the sharing of library materials so that our users have access to a wider ranges of information. However, there are expenses beyond those passed on to the library patron. Patrons, therefore, are asked to use discretion in ordering interlibrary loan.
The Simon Schwob Memorial Library will attempt to borrow materials or secure photocopies of journal articles for patrons with the understanding that the patron will abide by the regulations of the library. Interlibrary loans are a privilege, not a right. The lending library expects and deserves to have borrowed material returned on time. If our library abuses the interlibrary loan code, a lending library could refuse to furnish photocopies to our library. If a patron abuses the interlibrary loan code, we reserve the right to revoke that patron's interlibrary loan privileges.
Patrons who do not pick up materials, pay their charges on time, and/or return borrowed materials on time may have their ILL privileges revoked.
Requests
- Patrons are limited to five (5) ILL requests per day. Even then, the Interlibrary Loan Department will set ordering priorities when numerous requests are made by the same person.
- Please search the GIL Union Catalog before submitting an ILL book request. Using GIL Express will allow you to get books much faster, usually in two days. See our ILL/GIL Express Comparison for details on how ILL and GIL Express differ.
- It takes, on the average, about five days for a patron to receive a copy of a periodical article through ILL. Books are generally received in seven to ten days.
Pickup
- Music Library patrons will pick up material at the Music Library.
- Items obtained through ILL must be picked up at the Circulation Desk by the person placing the request. Patron must present a photo ID as well as sign (complete signature and date) for items.
- Books borrowed through ILL must be returned to Circulation Desk.
Charges
- Most material can be borrowed at no cost. However, if there is a charge for borrowing or photocopying, student borrowers must pay the charge. A student borrower should stipulate on the loan request form the maximum charge he/she is willing to pay. $10.00 is the suggested minimum.
- The patron is responsible for any fees (borrowing, overdue, damage, replacement, photocopying, etc.) that may be incurred, regardless of when the material arrives. Non-payment of such fees may result in a block being placed on the patron's request for transcripts, as well as the patron's attempt to register for classes and/or graduate.
- Please note that photocopies of articles in medical journals and journals published outside the U.S. are more likely to incur charges, and that those charges will usually exceed the suggested $10.00 minimum limit.
Renewals
- To renew an ILL book, logon to ILLiad and request a renewal at least a few days before the book is due.
