Stacks Maintenance Employee Manual: Straightening
- Fill out straightening tag located on the back of the office door, room 208.
- Do a quick walk through (15-20 mins.) of your assigned stacks and straighten up any problem areas (books uneven on shelf, gaps in books on shelf, books fallen over on shelf, books shelved to the end of the shelf, etc). Step 2 is always done when Straightening and Reading is assigned.

- Keep the books loose on the shelf. Do the finger test. You must be able to run two fingers down edgewise between any two books on the shelf with ease. Large books that do not fit upright on the shelf need to be shelved with the spine down.
Left: Book shelved spine down
- Some books are too long for the shelf and will overhang the edge of the shelf. Never force the book on the shelf, as it will displace books on the opposite side of the shelf.
Right: Overhanging book
- Pick up and throw away any paper or other trash found on the shelves, floor or carrels.
