Stacks Maintenance Employee Manual: Shelving
After pick up, place the books on each truck in call number order.
- Always shelve the lowest numbered truck!
- Always fill out the shelving tag with your name, date, starting time, stop (next call number to be shelved when truck is not finished), and ending time.
- Remember, when shelving, check four or five books to the right and left of where you have placed the book on the shelf.
- Each stack carries a call number label at each end. Be sure that the book being shelved does not exceed the call number at the beginning or ending of the stack.
- When shelving, always remember to leave room at the end of the shelf, even if it means shifting above or below the current shelf to make room for your book.
- Never force a book into place. Release the end shelf clip and be sure that the books are loose on the shelf so that you can run two fingers down edgewise between any two books on the shelf with ease.
- Make sure every book shelved it placed neatly on the shelf, and that the shelf is straight. If the book is too large to stand upright, be sure to shelve it with the spine down.
Notes of Interest
- Oversized books (as noted on the book pocket) are shelved in the ETC room.
- In the music section, Scores are shelved before all other M books.
