Activities
PoliciesFormats Handled by the Cataloging/Periodicals Department. The Department catalogs and processes incoming library materials, including books, scores, videorecordings, sound recordings, CD-ROMs and diskettes, as well as journals, magazines, and newspapers in print and microfilm. The Department does not typically handle government documents, electronic journals, and databases in its normal course of operations. Government Documents are processed by the Government Documents Department, and databases and electronic journals are managed by the Systems Department. Classification schemes:The Libraries employ several classification schemes for different materials as follows.
Library Mail Policies (U.S. Mail and Campus Mail Only)Mail is delivered and picked up at the main library twice daily, midmorning and midafternoon. Delivery and pickup times may vary. For special mailing needs, such as overnight mail, please see the Administrative Assistant (Vicky Thomas).
OCLCThe CSU Libraries are a governing member of LYRASIS, the regional service provider for OCLC (a bibliographic utility). The Libraries contribute holdings and original bibliographic records to the OCLC WorldCat database and also download records from WorldCat into the local library catalog. VoyagerAll libraries in the University System of Georgia use Ex Libris Voyager integrated library system. The online public access catalog (OPAC) is called GIL (GALILEO Interconnected Libraries). CSU’s local GIL catalog is available at https://gil.colstate.edu/. A combined catalog of all USG libraries, the GIL Universal Catalog, is available at https://giluc.usg.edu/. GOLDThe CSU Libraries participates in GOLD (Georgia Libraries Journal List), a union list of serials, to facilitate resource sharing among Georgia libraries. Periodicals staff create and maintain Local Holdings Records (LHRs) in OCLC’s Connexion Browser using the MARC21 Format for Holdings Data Standard (MFHD). GOLD is available at http://www.galileo.usg.edu/express?link=gejl MARCIVEThe USG contracts with MARCIVE for on-going assistance with authority control and catalog maintenance activities, including updates to name, title, and subject authority records and headings and notification of unrecognized headings. Maintaining authority control in local catalogs facilitates searching by ensuring consistency in name, title, and subject headings. MARCIVE also provides records for federal government documents received through the depository program. See Government Documents for more information about the depository program. BindingThe Libraries use National Library Bindery of Roswell, Georgia for binding periodicals, music scores, monographs, and CSU student theses. Cataloging and Periodicals staff enter information for materials to be bound into the ABLE (Advanced Bindery Library Exchange) system. The bindery picks up and delivers at the main library approximately every four weeks. WithdrawingThe Libraries occasionally remove damaged, lost, outdated, superseded, or no longer relevant items from the collections. Items selected for weeding by liaison librarians for reasons other than damage, loss, or newer editions are held for a minimum of two weeks to allow for review by other liaisons before being withdrawn. Liaisons wishing to challenge another liaison’s weeding decision should indicate their reason for disagreement on the weeding form and work with the other liaison to resolve the issue. All liaisons are notified by email before a group of materials is scheduled to be withdrawn. Procedures
