Significant Accomplishments of the Library in General

  • The Music Library, a department and the first branch of the Simon Schwob Memorial Library, received furniture and shelving, and all music materials were officially transferred from the main library to the Music Library

  • In January 2002, the Library began a subscription to JSTOR, an online archive of close to 120 scholarly journals; this subscription was made possible by a grant of $27,000 from the Student Technology Fee Committee

  • A million dollar library book endowment was included in the literature for CSU's Capital Campaign

  • The Library secured 21 new public computers through ETAC monies

  • Plans were developed for an Information Commons, an area designed to support the scholarly use of information, resources and technology; the area will be located in the Reference Department and will contain approximately 30 computers

  • The Instructional Technology Services Department spent $99,000 of special initiative monies ("Advanced Learning Technologies") to purchase computer and AV equipment to meet the needs of the campus community

  • Instructional Technology Services provided WebCT training to faculty that resulted in 90 faculty incorporating some aspect of WebCT into their courses

  • The Library conducted a user survey that garnered 364 responses and showed a high level of satisfaction with library collections, facilities, services and staff, February — March, 2002

  • The Library's reserve collection was relocated to closed stacks and the work area behind the Circulation area was expanded

  • UV tinting was applied to the clerestory windows on the western side of the building to handle the intensity of the evening sun

  • The Library officially instituted a new policy of allowing beverages in spill-proof/ resistant containers

  • The Library instituted a cell phone policy, requiring patrons to turn off ringers and conduct phone conversations outside the library

  • The Library Faculty held an all-day retreat at the Columbus Museum, August 2001

  • Library Faculty and Staff participated in "Library Staff Development Day," an all-day event held at CSU's Rankin Center; a presentation on facilitating meetings was conducted by a librarian from the University of Georgia, March 2002

  • The Library sponsored a university-wide Faculty Research Forum series; 16 faculty members made short presentations about their research. There were seven forums in all; each was an hour and a half in length. The Library provided refreshments for the attendees. Surveys indicated a strong approval rating for the series

  • The Library held its annual Student Assistant of the Year Recognition Luncheon at the Lindsay Mock Pavilion, May 2002; Kim Scott of Instructional Technology Services was named Library Student Assistant of the Year and received a certificate and cash prize

  • The Library extended the hours of operation of the Archives from 15 hours per week to 31 hours per week

  • The Archives acquired several new collections, including:
    • The Katherine Mahan Collection (80 linear feet)
    • The Ken Crooks, Jr., Papers (3 linear feet)
    • Original bound copies of Columbus newspapers from Emory University

  • The Board of the Historic Columbus Foundation committed to working toward the establishment of the Columbus Archives and History Center, at a central location, as a CSU affiliate

  • Members of the Board of the Historic Columbus Foundation enjoyed box lunches on the library's third floor and were given an orientation to the Archives, with collections of special interest highlighted, May 2002

  • The Schwob Library hosted two teleconferences for the local library community on "Virtual Reference Service," February and April, 2002

  • The Library rented the CSU bus for a day trip to the exhibits of the American Library Association's annual conference; seats were offered to CSU and community library employees through the Columbus Area Library Association

Erma Banks

  • Participated in a statewide usability study of the GIL and GALILEO webpages
  • "Training Paraprofessionals for the Reference Desk," presented at COMO, Jekyll Island, October 2001
  • Served as president of CALA (Columbus Area Library Association), 2001-2002

Hunter Eck

  • Attended the GIL Users Group Meeting, Athens, Georgia, June 2001
  • Promoted to Assistant Professor of Library Science, August 2002

Roberta Chodacki Ford

  • "Columbus State University Music Library: The Early Years, 1998-2002," presented at the MLA annual conference in Las Vegas, February 2002
